Driving vehicles after drinking is dangerous as it could lead to issues not only for the particular driver but also for others. Police dept has been taking many steps to prevent this is a well known fact. Soon, the traffic police would be intensifying the checks on the weekends in Chennai. Once 200 more breathalyzers are purchased then searches at 55 points would be intensified.
Just a few days back during the weekend in Chennai, as manya s 108 persons were caught for drunken driving and their vehicles were seized by the traffic police. It is learnt that in 2022 as many as 22313 cases of drunken driving were registered and 135 licences were sent to RTO for cancellation of the licences.
What really happens after drinking:
The doctors have mentioned that when a person is under the influence of alcohol then his or her motor skills are impaired. Their concentration would reduce and they would have slow reaction time. Vision could also get affected after drinking and this could lead to accidents. This would put the vehicle drivers plus passengers, pedestrians etc at risk. For the alcohol to get absorbed by the bloodstream, it would take 30minutes to 2hours. This could lead to slow breathing and cognitive skills might get delayed. It is learnt that a case regarding drunken driving gets registered when the breathalyzer finds the person with 30mg per 100ml of blood in the body.
Personnel from the law and order wing have been roped by the traffic police personnel to curb accidents due to drunken driving. In this scenario, atleast 36 breathalysers devices have been issued to the persons from law and order now. Every day, on an average 75 to 90 drunken driving cases get booked in Chennai. During the weekends, 175 to 200 cases get booked due to the special drivers etc.
