There is one multi-modal transport facility at Tambaram in Chennai. Now, the residents belonging to Velachery are hoping for a similar one in their locality also. This was mainly due to the setting up of CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority. It is known that Velachery is a very important residential locality in Chennai.

Many residents belonging to Velachery have mentioned that shifting Vijayanagar bus terminus near the MRTS Velachery railway station would result in setting up of a multi modal transport facility for many commuters.

It must be taken into account that MTC has been reluctant in shifting the MTC bus terminus or operating even a portion of buses from the railway station. This has resulted in the commuters being denied the multi modal link. Now, from Velachery railway station, few buses bound towards Ambattur Industrial Estate like D70 are being operated.

The TN govt has failed to explore the opportunity to create a multi modal facility by shifting the bus terminus adjacent to the railway station. This despite the proximity of the railway station and  the availability of all infrastructural facilities. This was pointed out by residents belonging to Ullagaram- Puzhuthivakkam.

It must be recalled that the bus terminus at Vijayanagaram in the past acted as a transport link for many passengers belonging to areas like Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam, Madipakkam, Pallikaranai, west Velachery. People from the Vijayanagar bus terminus here travelled to places like Tiruvottriyur, Broadway, Ice House, Egmore, Saidapet etc.  The bus terminus lost its transport hub status after opening up of MRTS services and after slow extension of several buses to the suburbs etc. Now, the bus terminus has got more bus services to Ambattur Industrial Estate only.

It was explained by a senior officer from the transport department that bus services operated via Vijayanagar bus terminus were not reduced. He added that many bus services to Chennai suburban places like Tambaram, Thiruvanmiyur and Keelkattalai etc were being operated.

The bus route no A51 ( Tambaram to Broadway via Velachery) provided a direct link to Anna Salai. It must be noted that previously bus route no A1 provided a direct link to Anna Salai.
