The setting up of an advanced tertiary water treatment plant by Metro water dept near the Perungudi lake has now caught the attention. This plant would be able to supply water to around 10000 residents present in and around Perungudi.

It is now revealed that the city water manager would stop buying water from the Nemmeli desal plant from March in 20-23 when the new plant would become functional. About 10 MLD per day could be treated by the plant in a day and this was according to a senior officer from Metro water dept.

To make the lake water portable, the tertiary treatment plant here uses advanced 3 levels of physical filtration like membrane technology etc. Three levels of disinfection like pre-chlorination process and advanced oxidation process using ozonation present at the tertiary treatment plant. Information collected is that the plant would take water from the lake then treat and distribute to the residents for domestic purposes. The good news is that the lake water is fit for treatment as there is no sewage flow into the lake water.

At present, Metro water dept purchases water from the Nemmeli desal plant by paying a higher cost per kilo litre. From the desal plant to the Perungudi water pumping station, water has to be transmitted and later distributed to the customers of metro water. Point is that once it becomes operational the treatment plant would save the cost of transmission, pumping and distribution for Metro water. It is learnt that the cost would be reduced by 80 percent.
