Recently, officials belonging to the Tamil Nadu drug control department conducted surprise raids at many medical shops in Chennai and its nearby areas. The main purpose of this was to monitor whether the sale of psychotropic and sleeping pills is being misused by the public.
The shocking truth is that a medical shop at Thiruvanmiyur in south Chennai has stocked up large quantities of painkillers and they have been selling to the public without proper receipt. The medical shop has been sealed now by the authorities. Under the Drugs and Cosmetic Act, action has been taken against the medical shop.
It was mentioned by former Justice Mr. Arumugaswamy that the medical shops must not sell psychotropic drugs and sleeping pills to anyone. He added that the medical prescription of the doctor or medical practitioner was compulsory to sell these medicines and proper receipts must be maintained by the medical shops.
To prevent the misuse of sleeping pills and psychotropic drugs etc, the director of the drug control department has issued orders to all retail pharmaceutical companies in Tamil Nadu. It is worthy to mention here that this urgent notice has been issued to prevent the painkillers and other medicines being used as narcotics.
