To accurately record the vehicle number plates and to issue fines, 200 more state of art ANPR cameras would be installed in the Chennai city. By this, there would be tightening of grip on the traffic rule violators. To reduce accidents, accidental deaths and traffic jams etc, the GCTP or Greater Chennai Traffic Police has been taking many steps is well known to us. Those who violate traffic rules are forced to pay penalties.  With the help of hand held cameras and through the footage recorded by the surveillance cameras etc, the GCTP levy penalties on the violators of traffic rules.

It is noteworth that at 5 lcoations in the busy Anna Nagar, foreign based TROZ cameras are also placed to nab the traffic violators etc. These TROZ cameras take photos of traffic rule violators is known. An amount of Rs 10.5 cr was allotted for installing dross cameras at 3 locations like Spencer Junction, Ega Junction and Mint Junction etc in Chennai.

When compared to 2021, the accidents have come down by 11.8percenmt in 2022 and that was due to the superb efforts taken by the GCTP. The accident fatalities have also come down in this period.

In the year 2020, 1869318 cases of traffic violation cases were registered. In the year 2021, as many as  21lakhs 2209 cases were registered and in 2022 as many as 2294823 cases were registered.

Now, the outstanding dues due to traffic violations are being collected by the traffic police in Chennai. In this scenario, 200 ANPR or automatic number plate recognition cameras would be set up  at several locations across Chennai to collect fines from the traffic violators.

The various traffic violations include helmetless travelling of both driver and pillion rider of 2 wheelers, fines due to non wearing of seat  belts by drivers of 4 wheelers, fines for crossing the stop sign, fines for driving in the opposite direction, fines for talking while driving etc. A tender has been issued regarding the setting up of 200 additional ANPR cameras in Chennai. Already there are 15 such ANPR cameras in Chennai and soon the number of such ANPR cameras would be increased in the city.

It is worth mentioning that these ANPR would capture the photos of the traffic violators and the traffic police  would then send these photos to the particular traffic violator in their mobile phones along with their fine amount..
