Going to Australia from Chennai might not be that difficult in the future!!
The news is that AAI or Airport Authority of India has been wooing Qantas Airways to start direct flights between Chennai and Perth/ Sydney in Australia. It is known that Qantas Airways is the largest airline in Australia based on fleet size. Large Indian diaspora would be benefited when the direct flight services between Chennai and Australia starts. This was mentioned by the Chennai airport director Mr. Sharad Kumar.
He spoke about the world class facilities at the new terminal at the Chennai airport and wanted Qantas Airways to experience it. It must be noted that Qantas Airways is trying to enhance its foothold internationally. Information collected is that Qantas Airways along with its subsidiary Jetstar have launched first non-stop flights between Bangalore and Australia.
There are no direct flights now between Chennai and Australia and I would take 10 hours plus to travel to Perth with a stopover at Singapore. The travel time between Chennai and Perth would be reduced by half when direct flight services resume between Chennai and Perth.
It is noteworthy that there are more than 7,00,000 Indians (both Australians of Indian origin and Indians)making superb contributions towards Australia`s economy. Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement or ECTA has been signed between India and Australia and Australia is having huge interest to improve the ties with India.
The need to have direct connectivity between Chennai and Perth was explained by Mr. Steve Dawson, minister for Emergency services and Digital Economy. Recently, Mr. Roger Cook, Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism of Western Australia made his presence felt in New Delhi at CAPA India Aviation Summit. He discussed having a direct flight service from India.
On 20th March 2023, Western Australia signed a letter of intent with the TN government to strengthen the relationship. The sensational piece of information is that both TN and Western Australia would work jointly on education, economic cooperation, space and innovation, energy, mining, health, agriculture and medical life sciences etc. It must be recalled that in July 2022, Mr. Roger Cook opened a second office in Chennai.
