The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has approached the state government requesting Rs 2.3 crore to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the ambitious task of linking the East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). With an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crore, the project aims to construct a 10-km-long bridge across the Adyar River, connecting Thiruvanmiyur on the ECR to Thoraipakkam on the OMR.

The primary objective of this project is to significantly reduce travel time between the two major roads from approximately one hour to a mere 15 minutes. Additionally, it aims to alleviate the traffic congestion burdening the ECR and OMR, which are crucial routes accommodating IT companies, educational institutions, residential areas, and popular tourist spots.

The CMDA has already submitted the proposal to the state government, and it is expected to receive approval within the next few months. The project is slated to be completed within three years, offering a substantial boost to the development of Chennai`s southern suburbs.

This strategic link between the ECR and OMR is anticipated to bring forth a multitude of benefits. Firstly, it will significantly reduce travel time, enhancing commuters` convenience and saving them valuable resources. Secondly, by alleviating traffic congestion, the project will improve traffic flow and mitigate pollution levels. Lastly, it will foster improved connectivity between the southern suburbs and the rest of Chennai, facilitating smoother and more accessible transportation.

The CMDA remains optimistic about completing the project within the stipulated timeline and budget. With its potential to stimulate economic growth, generate employment opportunities, and attract new businesses, the successful realization of this endeavor is expected to leave a lasting impact on the southern suburbs of Chennai.

In summary, the proposed link between the ECR and OMR holds the promise of reduced travel time, eased traffic congestion, and enhanced connectivity. This endeavor, once accomplished, is poised to transform the transportation landscape of Chennai`s southern regions, benefiting residents, commuters, and the local economy as a whole.
