On Monday, Indias` first cruise ship Cordelia Empress began its journey from Chennai Port to Sri Lanka`s Hambantota Port. It is now revealed that this cruise ship would reach Srilanka on 7h of June 2023. The cruise ship was flagged by Union minister for port, shipping, waterways Mr. Sarbanandha Sonowal.
From Hambantota, the cruise ship would go to Trincomalee and dock there for a day. Later, on 9th June the cruise ship would come back to Chennai.
Information is that GAC Shipping India Pvt Ltd initiated this cruise service to Sri Lanka and that has grabbed many eyeballs.
Various features that would be available in this cruise arre luxury shopping area, pubs, swimming pool, food court, casino, spas, theatres, play area plus few others. According tno Mr. Sarbhanandha Sonowal, it was the vision of Indian PM Mr. Narendra Modi to promote cruise tourism in India. Point is that the initiatives taken by Chennai Port Authority and TN Govt tourism dept must be appreciated.
The minister then hinted about the international cruise terminals that are getting ready at Mumbai for Rs 5000 cr.
In the next 4 months, the cruise ship would carry 50000 passengers from India to Srilanka and this was pointed out by Cordelia CEO Mr.Jurgen Bailom.It is superb to note that Cordelia is operating cruises to Kochi, Goa, Mumbai and Lakshadweep etc.
History about Cordelia Empress:
In 2018, the cruise terminal in Chennai was developed and an amount of Rs 17.2 crores was spent on it. The cruise terminal was developed in an area of 2880 sqm. It could accommodate 3000 persons at one time.
It must be recalled that in May month in 2022 Chennai Port and Waterways Leisure Private Tourism has signed a MOU to create a cruise circuit.
