There are not many students now who opt for BSc Maths course and the seats in many Chennai colleges are now lying vacant.

It is now said that the lack of clarity regarding the basic concepts in Mathematics and low marks scored in class 12 have made the students not opt for BSc maths courses in the colleges. Point is that some colleges in Chennai have opted for spot admissions but other colleges are trying to fill up the seats before the colleges reopen. In some colleges, even the BSc Physics course is also not preferred by the students.

It was highlighted by principal Mr. Paul Wilson of  MCC, Tambaram, Chennai that both BSs Maths and BSc Physics courses are yet to be filled up completely. He threw light on how the students have lost maths skills during the Covid pandemic. He added that the students do not have any confidence now to take up BSc Maths or BSc Physics having Maths as an allied subject.  The superb piece of information is that MCC Tambaram would  be bringing in internships, skill development AND campus placements etc to increase the job opportunities for the studeNts.

Principal of DG Vaishnava College in Arumbakkam in Chennai, Mr. S. Santhosh Babu spoke about how the college  has 140 seats and how there are not many takers for BSc Maths subject now. He added that awareness regarding basic sciences courses would be created.

Chromepet based SDNB Vaishnav College for Women has got plans to teach all its students elementary mathematics like simple algebra, trigonometry etc for the first 2 weeks to remove fears about maths. The principal of SDNB Vaishnav College for Women, R. Geetha, mentioned that the students were unable to score high marks in class 12 examinations and due to that the students do not prefer BSc Maths.
