For developing the Central railway station into a net zero energy building, the Dr.MGR Chennai Central railway station has been awarded with a platinum certificate by Indian Green Building Council or IGBC.
On Monday, at the grand closing function of Swachhata Pakkwada on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations, Mr. R.N. Singh GM of SR received the platinum certificate from the chairman of IGBC Mr. Ajith Kumar Chordia.
It was later highlighted by a senior officer from Chennai Division of SR that the Chennai Central railway station received the highest platinum certificate based on the building being made net zero through the installation of renewable energy sources for conserving electricity plus due to replacing electric fixtures with energy efficient fixtures.
The sensational piece of information is that Chennai Central railway station was the first ever in the zone to install a rooftop solar plant of 1.8MW by installing solar panels on the platform shelters and station buildings etc thereby saving Rs 10.75 crores annually.
