In north Chennai, Old Washermanpet is an important residential locality with a huge population. The MTC bus passengers here are unhappy now and this is making news now.
Now, the Clock Tower bus shelter is in a damaged condition and this is posing a huge risk for many commuters here. It must be taken into account that during the rains the water leaked causing huge inconvenience for many who waited to catch the bus here.
According to some passengers at Old Washermenpet, the old bus shelter was damaged and a year back the Corporation had set up another bus shelter near the Tondiarpet zonal office. The roof of the bus shelter is damaged leading to leakage during the rains. The bitter fact is that during the rains the road became so bad that the passengers were forced to stand under the damaged bus shelter.
The passengers complained about how the frequency of the MTC buses was reduced now and how this has made many people wait for a long time under the scorching sun. If one bus shelter here has been occupied by the 2 wheelers of the MTC officials etc the other bus shelter has been occupied by street dwellers etc. This has been making the people wait on the roads.
It was later explained by a Tondiarpet resident that the zonal officers and ward councillors did not bother about the issues of the residents here. The resident concluded that the civic authorities would take action only when an accident takes place.
As per the 42nd ward councillor M. Renuka, it was clear that many complaints were received. She assured that the temporary works would be carried out on the damaged bus shelters before the NE monsoon. The good news is that atleast 4 damaged bus shelters will be replaced in the coming January.
