The mixing of sewage drains into the SWD has been a huge issue in Thiruvanmiyur, an important residential locality in Chennai. The residents here have been finding it difficult.

The good news is that Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has informed the southern bench of NGT or National green tribunal that a permanent solution has been planned to stop sewage water from mixing with the storm water drains. For this, GCC would associate with other departments like the Highways Department etc would play their roles.

It must be recalled that a petition was filed by Thiruvanmiyur based East Kamaraj Nagar Residents Welfare Association regarding the dilapidated sewage chambers. It is learnt that the GCCs Adyar zonal officer submitted before the bench that Kamaraj Nagar was at a lower level when compared to the LB Road level. Point is that from this LB Road rain water drains in reverse flow. At the connecting point of Kamaraj Nagar and LB Road, a curve was connected to prevent the excess flow of stormwater. There were also a bunch of BSNL cables that prevented the free flow leading to stagnation or reverse flow in the drain at East Kamaraj Nagar.

Even before the SWD was constructed in the area, BSNL cables were laid. This was as per some officers from BSNL. They added that due consideration was not given while constructing the SWD above or below the cables. With the help of BSNL officers, the cables would be removed and this was mentioned by the GCC.
