Chennai Corporation Targets Unregistered Poramboke Land for Property Tax!

Posted on: 12/Jul/2024 3:33:56 PM
The Chennai Corporation is set to impose property tax on over 50,000 buildings constructed on `poramboke` land, which is government property.

These buildings are not recorded in revenue documents and have been identified as tax defaulters. Currently, the corporation collects Rs 18,000 crores annually in property taxes from 13 lakh property owners within its limits.

To enhance revenue collection, the corporation plans to target properties without proper land titles or patta. As a first step, 20,000 such buildings in areas like T.Nagar, Alandur, Manali, and Madhavaram will undergo assessment for unpaid taxes. Officials are also addressing cases of unclaimed buildings in T.Nagar that have been encroached upon, emphasizing the need for proper documentation to avoid tax default.
