As the Tamil auspicious month of Purattasi began on Tuesday, the demand for vegetables in Chennai has surged due to a decrease in meat and fish consumption. Despite the increased demand, prices remain stable thanks to a consistent supply to the Koyambedu market. However, traders anticipate a potential 10-15% price increase over the weekend if demand continues to rise significantly.
The Koyambedu market receives over 500 trucks of vegetables daily from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. While prices for peas and carrots are currently high-Rs 400 and Rs 60 per kilo, respectively-most other vegetables are priced below Rs 50 per kilo.
P. Sukumaran, treasurer of the Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants’ Association, expects that prices may initially rise by 10-15% and could increase further depending on supply. G. Thyagarajan, a vendor at Saidapet, mentioned that although sales have been slow recently, they are anticipated to pick up soon.
