The Chennai residents are aware of the red alert issued now due to excessive rains. As a result, the super markets and grocery stores present in Chennai etc ran empty of the essential items.

Some residents have complained that even before the rain sets in, the shops run out of essentials like vegetables, bread, milk, eggs etc. It was later bought out by a resident from Aminjikarai in Chennai that all the essential items like bread, milk and vegetables etc have been sold out completely and shops were heavily crowded.

On Monday, the essential items went out of stock online too. It must be taken into account that market areas in localities like Choolai, Pattalam and Egmore recorded less foot fall. The scarcity of essential items was also highlighted by many in the social networking sites too.

One resident mentioned in Twitter that he had visited 12 vegetable shops in places like OMR, ECR, Thiruvanmiuyr, Velachery etc and every single shop was wiped clean. In the wholesale fish market at Chintadripet, many stalls were shut down due to heavy rains and also due to less catch.

On Tuesday morning, the slaughter house at Pulianthope was functioning as usual. Point is that meat would get affected on Wednesday if it rains continuously.  The sales of sea foods got affected yesterday. The arrival of poultry from western districts got delayed and this led to issues to many poultry and mutton sellers.

According to a seafood export company employee it was clear that the supply of mudcrabs from Pazhaverkaadu and Kovalam areas were hit and it would affect the exports.
