Residents in parts of southern Chennai will experience a temporary suspension of piped water supply on Thursday, November 7, due to essential pipeline relocation work at the Nemmeli desalination plant. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) announced that this disruption is required as part of the Highways Department’s project to expand the East Coast Road (ECR) into a six-lane route.
The Highways Department’s expansion plan involves installing a stormwater drainage system along the ECR, which necessitates relocating the main pipeline of the Nemmeli desalination plant. This plant, with a production capacity of 110 million liters per day, serves as a crucial source of potable water for southern Chennai. The pipeline relocation will occur near the VGP campus area.
Affected Areas and Duration
Water supply through pipelines will be temporarily unavailable in several neighborhoods across three zones, specifically in:
- Zone 13 (Adyar): Includes areas such as Tiruvanmiyur, Besant Nagar, Kalakshetra Colony, Indira Nagar (parts).
- Zone 14 (Perungudi).
- Zone 15 (Sholinganallur): Includes areas like Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Injambakkam, Vettuvankeni, and Neelankarai.
The suspension will last until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Alternative Water Arrangements
To ensure continued access to water, CMWSSB will provide water through tanker services to areas that do not have regular water connections or are experiencing low pressure. For emergency requirements, residents can register for water tankers on the CMWSSB website at [cmwssb.tn.gov.in](https://cmwssb.tn.gov.in).
