Chennai to See Revised Parking Charges in Rush Hours Soon
Parking charges in busy areas are set to rise during peak hours under a new parking policy expected to be adopted within three weeks. Initially, the revised rates will apply to market areas, while residential zones may see parking charges introduced on roads wider than nine meters in the future. Parking on streets narrower than seven meters will be prohibited.
Currently, parking fees in Chennai are ₹20 per hour for cars and ₹5 per hour for motorcycles, with premium parking costing ₹60. The Chennai Corporation Council will finalize the new charges once the policy is approved.
Experts emphasize the need for efficient parking management to reduce traffic congestion and promote sustainable urban transport. Suggestions include expanding multi-level parking facilities, introducing nominal parking rates for public carriers, and enabling digitized payment systems. Residents advocate for increased parking spaces and affordable rates to address growing challenges.
