Sensational!! The price of garlic has reduced drastically now in Chennai after a year!!
From Rs 300 to Rs 500 per kg, the price of garlic has reduced drastically now to Rs 150 per kg in the Chennai market. The reason for this reduction in the garlic prices now is mainly due to the arrival from TN and from neighbouring states.
For the next few days depending on the supply, the price of garlic would remain the same and this was according to some traders. Previously, the supply of garlic from states like Maharashtra, MP, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have dwindled and due to this garlic was sold for Rs 3000 to Rs 5000 also in Chennai for the past few months.
First crop cultivation:
During December, the farmers sowed additional crops during the first crop cultivation and it has increased the production from TN and neighbouring states in the last few days. In the wholesome and in the semi wholesome markets, garlic has been sold for Rs 100 to Rs 150 per kg. Point is that due to adequate supply of garlic the price would remain stable or reduce in the coming days. There could be marginal increase in the prices when there is fluctuation in the arrival of garlic. This was pointed out by a trader at the Koyambedu wholesale market.
In the year 2022, garlic was sold for just Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg across India is known to us. It is noteworthy that the farmers were forced to dump tonnes of garlic and due to that they sowed limited crops before the onset of NE monsoon in 2023. From December 2023 onwards, there has been a steep increase in the garlic prices. At the retail markets in Chennai, the garlic prices were so high at Rs 500 per kg.
It is worthy to note that due to the stable supply from various states, garlic prices reduced and remained stable for a few months. This was mentioned by Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer of Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants Association. He added that due to frequent weather changes the garlic supply was affected and this led to huge increase in the garlic prices.
