If you happen to go around Chennai, then you might come across several roads getting cold milled!!

It is worthy to mention here that the Highways department has started the work to cold mill the surface of several roads like Velachery- SRP Tools Road, Lakshmi Puram- Puzhal Road, Chennai- Ennore road etc. Soon, these roads will be re-laid.

Every day around 150m of road surface is being milled or scraped off and this was according to some sources belonging to the Highways Dept. It was brought out that milling had been carried out end to end so that there were no sharp edges on the road causing issues to two wheelers. It was explained by the source that when milling was carried out in small patches care would be taken and motorists etc would not face any issues. As per the court order milling is being done now and height of the road after relaying doesn`t increase unduly.

Point to be noted is that the paver machine could lay about 400m to 500m per day but milling could be done for about 150m per day. It is learnt that relaying work is done 2 days after the milling work. The works have been done in a fast manner in just 3 to 4 days as and this despite the tender period would be for a month.

The motorists would face issues if due to more joints that would be there when relaying gets carried out in smaller portions. It is noteworthy that for the sake of minimum disturbance to the traffic flow milling, cleaning the stretches of dust and removed bitumen and re-laying has been done during the nights. At a cost of Rs 10 cr, the works are being carried out now in various important roads. Point is that the roads (belonging to the Highways) present in the localities such as Vanagaram, Puzhal, Ambattur, Madhavaram, RedHills etc in Chennai would be milled and re-laid.

A resident from Thiruvanmiyur mentioned about warning signages that need to be placed ahead of the milled road stretches. By this, motorists would slow down and bigger vehicles would avoid speeding up. It is known that when bigger vehicles speed up then the two wheeler riders would find it difficult in these stretches. He concluded that the motorists would lose their balance due to the uneven surface and speeding of other motorists would only increase the risk.
