Three important roads in the Teynampet zone in Chennai would soon have railings on the footpaths and the work would be carried out by GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation. The roads are namely Avvai Shanmugam Salai, Conronsmith Road, and Padmawathi Road.
Information is that the work would be carried out at an estimated cost of Rs 36lakhs in the Avvai Shanmugam Salai, Conronsmith Road for Rs 6lakhs and at Padmavathi Road for Rs 96lakhs.
There are several schools in these places and the safety of these school students is very important. Therefore, the railing work on the footpaths in these roads would be done taking into account the school students safety. This was according to an official belonging to the Bus Route Roads department. To avoid the two wheelers and four wheelers not driving on the pavements during heavy traffic congestion, GCC has been taking important steps.
In the beginning, the work would be carried out on these 3 important roads on trial basis and later the works would be extended to other school zones. For that, the feedback from the public would be considered. As per some activists, the implementation must be proper due to several snags in the current system.
Several years back, GCC has promised to put ramps on the pavements and this was mentioned by Mr. K. Prabhu, an activist. He spoke about how in January GCC had discussed pavement accessibility with various associations for the differently able persons. The issue regarding the height of the footpath was also discussed. Truth is that the issue has not been solved yet. He concluded that the decision to install railings must be checked as there might be snags in the future.
