MTC Plans Direct Bus Services to Chennai Airport Terminals
In a bid to enhance last-mile connectivity, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is planning to launch daily bus services directly into the Chennai Airport campus.
Current Situation:
Although many buses pass via GST Road near the airport, passengers must walk nearly a kilometre to reach the terminals — a major inconvenience, especially during bad weather or with heavy luggage.
Proposed Plan:
MTC has requested approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation to operate buses directly into the airport premises. Once approved, a trial run of 10 buses per day will begin.
Proposed Routes:
- Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam
- Chennai Airport to Akkarai (via Outer Radial Road & Sholinganallur)
Background:
MTC had earlier operated AC Volvo services from the airport to Chennai Central, which were later discontinued due to low usage. However, temporary services during the northeast monsoon received positive feedback, prompting this new initiative.
Status: Awaiting final clearance from the Civil Aviation Ministry before launch.
