158 Sewage Outfalls to be plugged by Metro Water

Metro Water has prepared a second phase detailed project report, to plug 158 sewage outfalls by way of strengthening the existing sewerage system in a bid to improve the waterways in Chennai.
 
This came up after Metro Water identified 337 sewage outfalls in Cooum river, Adyar river and Buckingham canal. Work related to plugging sewage outfalls in 179 areas had started as a part of the first phase of the project.
 
Metro Water sources said that Rs 163 crore would be spent in the second phase.
 
They said that in the second phase, work would be carried out in 56 places in Cooum river basin, 70 in Buckingham Canal and 32 in Adyar Basin.
 
The objective for implementation of this project is to prevent pollution in waterways and improve functioning of the sewer system in places such as Mogappair, Anna Nagar, Saligramam, Virugambakkam, Aminjikarai, Nungambakkam, Chetpet, Chintadripet, Triplicane, Tondiarpet, Washermanpet, Otteri, Pulianthope, Villivakam, Korukkupet, Foreshore Estate, Mylapore, Adyar and Velachery.
 
They added that work orders had been issued to plug the sewage outfalls in the first phase which is expected to be completed by January 31, 2016.  The failure to plug outfalls has been a major hindrance in the beautification and restoration of waterways in the city, a source said.
