As strong winds bashing from the eastern direction, Chennai receives the maximum temperature of only 32C.

On Sunday, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Nungambakkam traced a maximum of 32.1C, while the airport weather station registered 32.6C.

Even though the Sun’s radiation is very harsh, we yet have beefy easterly winds blowing, that stayed the reason which keeps the hot phase down, said Y E A Raj, deputy director general, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai.

Comparing to the last year, similar pattern with the temperature around 32C till March 21 has been noticed down. Though, within the subsequent days, it upshots to 34 and 35C because of overturn in the wind pattern.

In previous years, the heat caught up with the city in early March. The temperature touched 35C on 3 March, 2012 but it was 37C on 10 March, 2011.

According to the Met office, the temperature may stay in the lower 30s for the rest of the month. By April, the wind pattern may reverse and the city will be getting stronger winds from the West, which would add to the heat.

After April, the venue of the sea breeze will ascertain the temperature," said Raj. Also the early arrival of breeze may keep the temperature down, he added.
