Located in Chennai, Villivakkam is a well developed residential place with huge population. It is near to this Villivakkam places like Padi, Ambattur etc are present and these places are home to many industries.
The latest news that has come out is to restore Villivakkam tank into a picnic spot, the Greater Chennai has now got an approval for Rs 16 crores project.
It is worthy to mention here that last week high level committee headed by none other than the secretary of the finance department sanctioned the civic body for the restoration work. It is known that the water body is spread over 36 acres and 11.5 acres of this belongs to Chennai metro water body. It is now said that the proposal from the civic body is for the remaining 25 acres of the water body.
The good news is facilities such as gymnasium, children’s park plus others facilities like pathway for walking, space for Aavin parlour, multipurpose lawn, parking space etc would be constructed as a part of restoration of this huge water body in Villivakkam.
Haris Sulthan who is state body member of social activism group titled ‘Arappor Iyakkam’ spoke about the non requirement of Aavin parlour here. He also spoke about challenging the proposal as and when the corporation submits the documents. It must be noted that this group is involved in fighting a case in the National Green Tribunal for recovering the Villivakkam tank.
Recharging ground water tables in places like Korattur, Padi, SIDCO Nagar etc would be possible in the restoration of the tank and this was confirmed by the corporation officials. It is now revealed that ground water in the nearby areas is not available even at depths of 100 feets.
According to an official, 84000 cubic metres of debris must be removed from the tank so that after the restoration water holding capacity of the tank would go to 70000 cubic metres from 20000 cubic metres.
