Chennai is a fantastic city with huge population. This population has been creating many traffic congestion issues. Many flyovers are being constructed in various places in Chennai. The latest news is two flyovers would be constructed in Nandanam as well as in Eldam’s Road in Chennai so that the traffic congestion could be eased. This would be undertaken by the corporation of Chennai under the smart city mission.
Recently a review meeting was held by the minister of rural and municipal administration is known. In that meeting the minister spoke about how civic body must take up the bridge work in the places selected under the smart city mission. According to few officials belonging to Chennai Corporation, two new flyovers would be built connecting Eldam’s Road and Venkatanarayana Road plus Venkatanarayana Road and Muthuramalinga Thevar Road.
An official then stated that these junctions were chosen to ease the traffic congestion and the talks regarding this are at initial stages only now. Feasibility studies would start once Chennai smart city limited board gives sanction.
Retired director of national transportation, planning and research centre, Mr. N.S. Srinivasan, expressed his views on this. He spoke about how 10 years back a long bridge was planned from Arivalayam and Venkatanarayana Road by the department of highways. He then spoke about how detailed study was conducted and date was also collected. There were also some alternative plans and feasibility was studied. The volume of traffic has increased now. Mr. Srinivasan highlighted that mass- transport systems must be given importance and not the junctions alone but the entire traffic corridor must be developed. It is true that roads have cut down footpaths and cycle tracks have been reduced.
It was also brought out that flyovers are not long term solutions but just short term solutions to ease the traffic congestion. These flyovers consume huge amount of money for building but are directed at very small percentage of road users. It is said that these locations fall under metro rail area and the purpose of constructing the flyovers along the same corridor is of no use as car users would increase. This was confirmed by Nashwa Naushad of Institute for Transportation and Development Policy.
