It was in the year 1965 tenements at Vyasarpadi were constructed and in the year 1987 tenements at MGR Nagar were constructed. Over the years, these tenements have deteriorated and residents have been finding it difficult.
It is now said that these tenements built by TNSCB or Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance board would be rebuilt again and an amount of more than Rs 3200 crores would be spent on it by the government of Tamil Nadu over the next 5 years. This was mentioned by Mr. T.M. Anbarasan, minister for rural industries. It is known that he is also in-charge of the board now.
On Thursday, the minister was busy laying the foundation stone for the new TNSCB tenements at MGR Nagar and at Vyasarpadi. He spoke about how after reviewing the conditions of the present tenements in the Chennai city details of the damaged houses and Rs 3200 crores estimate were prepared. It is learnt that the chief minister of TN Mr. M.K. Stalin had assured to allocate the required funds and the whole work would be finished in another 5 years of time. After the DMK party came to power, this was the first function of the TNSCB.
To provide tenements to 288 families, 180 tenements are being rebuilt at MGR Nagar and an amount of Rs 45.31 crores is being spent for this. Information collected is that in north Chennai Vyasarpadi as many as 192 tenements are being rebuilt at a cost of Rs 33.16 crores. The facilities of high rise apartments would be there in these upcoming tenements.
Point to be noted is that tenements at Vyasarpadi would have an area of 400 sq ft each whereas tenements at MGR Nagar would have an area of 411 sq ft. Every day, CMWSSB would be supplying 300 litres of water to each of these tenements. Lifts and generators would be present at the tenements in MGR Nagar. It is superb to note that concrete roads plus SWD and street lights etc would be there. Before the expected time, the construction works would get over and the tenements would be allotted to the beneficiaries.
