Record-breaking Property Tax Collection: Chennai Corporation Collects ₹285.38 Crore

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has reported a record-breaking property tax revenue collection in the financial year 2022-23, with a total of Rs. 2,044 crore collected. Out of this amount, Rs. 1,522.86 crore was collected as property tax.

In the last 15 days of April 2023, the GCC collected more than Rs. 285.38 crore as property tax. Among the 15 zones in Chennai, Teynampet zone recorded the highest collection of Rs. 61.84 crore, followed by Adyar zone with a collection of Rs. 41.19 crore.

While Teynampet zone recorded the highest collection, the industrialized Manali zone and Thiruvotriyur recorded the least collection of Rs. 3.25 crore and Rs. 4.84 crore, respectively. On April 15, the last date for property tax collection without penalty, Teynampet zone alone collected Rs. 9.86 crore.
 
The GCC conducted special camps on April 8 and 9 to collect tax, and at least 2.56 lakh property owners paid the tax and availed the 5% incentive until April 6. The sources estimate that the current tax collection, with revised property tax, could be the highest in recent years. On Saturday alone, the GCC collected Rs. 44.72 crore, contributing significantly to the record-breaking tax revenue collection.
