The Railway administration has prepared a detailed project report at a cost of Rs 428 crores and has sent a note to the Railway Board to convert the Perambur railway station into a 4th railway terminal. The reason for this move would be to reduce the heavy congestion.

It must be noted that previously at the Salt Quarters in Chennai a study was conducted to utilise a vacant land (to construct the 4th railway terminal) present near the Central railway station. After the study, the site was rejected. Later on, there was a proposal to construct the 4th railway terminal at Villivakkam. Point is that the Railway administration cancelled it.

In this scenario, the Railway administration has proposed to convert Perambur railway station into a 4th railway terminal. To carry out the work at a cost of Rs 428cr, a DPR was prepared for this purpose.

The Railway administration has been planning to remove the railway dept located near Perambur Loco Works and construct a 4th terminal there. It is well known that a 3rd metro line would be constructed near the Perambur railway station. It is now mentioned that the newly proposed 4th railway terminal at Perambur would be of superb benefit for many passengers.

The 4th railway terminal at Perambur would make Perambur an important hub for providing transport services for the trains that operates to northern states across the country

According to some officials belonging to the Railways it was clear that since there is sufficient land at Perambur detailed project report has been prepared to construct a 4th terminal. It is now brought out that the locations of the additional facilities of the railway station, parcel office, parking facilities, entrances and other details would be included. The report regarding this would be sent to the Railway Board also. Once approval is received, work would be started.

Currently, there are 2 platforms in Perambur railway station and 2 additional platforms would be constructed. In 2028, this 4th terminal will be opened.
