According to the head of the department of mental well being and de-addiction specialist Dr. SP. Kurinjinathan the stigma surrounding addiction was a huge problem in seeking advice.
He later explained that drinking has been the most common form of addiction and liver damage has become a common health issue. He spoke about how 15 years back the number of liver transplants was comparatively low and how there has been more demand now. Point to be noted is that it is important to identify and address any type of addiction.
It must be taken into account that addiction has been mistakenly viewed as moral failing or lack of willpower etc. Genetic, psychological and environmental factors play a huge role in addiction. To overcome addiction, proper medical treatment under the guidance of medical experts would be needed. Dr. Kurinjinathan concluded that families could play a supporting role for the addicts by making the addicts seek de-addiction and rehabilitation etc.
