Nearly 40% of Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II project has been completed. The ₹63,246 crore project spans 118.9 km across three corridors: Madhavaram to SIPCOT (Corridor 3), Light House to Poonamallee (Corridor 4), and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (Corridor 5).
According to Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has achieved 40.41% physical progress and 32.74% financial progress. The first operational stretch will be the 9-km elevated section from Poonamallee to Porur, expected to open by December 2025, followed by an extension to Kodambakkam.
While elevated sections are progressing well, only 19 km of the planned 50.5 km underground tunnels have been completed. Corridor 3, primarily underground, faced delays due to a canceled tender for station construction, affecting project timelines.
