The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to enhance non-motorised transport (NMT) infrastructure across 200 km of city roads at an estimated cost of ₹200 crore, announced Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru.

The project aims to promote safer and pedestrian-friendly streets, benefiting senior citizens and students while discouraging excessive use of private vehicles. Planned developments include wider footpaths, improved intersections, and enhanced street furniture.

However, challenges remain poor coordination between government agencies has led to damaged NMT infrastructure and encroachments by vendors. The lack of clear vending and no-vending zones has further hindered progress. Despite efforts since 2014, pedestrian and cyclist safety remains a concern, with limited success in increasing walking and cycling trips.
