The Election Commission’s model code of conduct for elections has come into force. Hence a big labor force has been deployed to remove Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s on water bottles and canteen boards.

All ‘Amma’ water bottles have been stripped off their labels and stacks of transparent plastic bottles line up the ‘Amma Kudineer’ stalls set up across bus stations. A white patch has taken the place of Jayalalithaa’s image on the boards. Though the labels that have the CM’s picture are being ripped off, the bottles have the word ‘Amma’ engraved in plastic. About 20,000 of these bottles are sold everyday, said an official in charge of the scheme.

Green-coloured boards at ‘Amma’ canteens have been removed at many places. At budget canteens where boards are intact the chief minister’s mug shot hides behind a white sheet of paper, a sticker or even colourful gift wraps. It’s not just photographs of the CM that are being removed. All wall paintings, posters, digital banners and advertisements visible to the public even on private property that has political colour or representation will be removed. The corporation also has the giant task of cleaning wall paintings and posters found in every nook and corner. The work is enormous and there is limited manpower.
