Thiruchendur is an important place in the southern part of Tamil Nadu and that is mainly due to the presence of Lord Subramanya Swami temple here. This temple is one of the 6 abodes of Lord Murugar is a known fact.
Yesterday, 7th November, this temple was brimming with devotees. Reason for that was because of Soorasamharam which was the highlight of Kanda Shasti festival.
It must be taken into account that on the occasion Soorasamharam Lord Murugar defeated demon Soorapadhman. This is observed annually to mark the victory of good over evil. At around 4:30pm in the evening thousands of devotees made their presence felt at the beach sands of Thiruchendur temple to witness Soorasamharam. It is learnt that a decked up jayanthi nathar was taken in procession before signifying the killing of demon soorapadman with vel or spear.
Around 1am in the noon itself, the sanctus sanctorum of the temple was opened for devotees. Around 1:30pm, Viswaroopa deeparadhanai took place and was followed by Udhayamarthanda abishegam, Yogasala puja and Yogasala deeparadhana etc.
On 2nd November, the 6 day festival began with yogasala puja. It is worth mentioning that during the days of festivity the devotees observed fasting and chanted prayers etc. The devotees also took a holy dip in the sea and chanted prayers.
There were many devotees who came to the temple in padayatra and kavadi rituals were also performed by the devotees. To conduct the festival in an organised way, the district administration has made arrangements. It is learnt that the Thoothukudi police dept introduced a QR code system with a link in the interest of the devotees. This was done to help the devotees to have access to the police helpline first aid centres, public transport etc.
To safeguard the devotees who come to the temple in Thiruchendur, police force was also deployed adequately. The security arrangements were inspected by SP Mr. Albert John. Near the temple, around 3000 policemen were present and CCTV cameras were also used to keep a close eye. In case of any emergency situations, as many as 10 teams of CSF persons were also deployed.
