Tamil Nadu chief electoral officer Praveen Kumar said 32 central police forces would arrive in the state by March 23 in a bid to strengthen the poll process.

“The forces will monitor expenditure,” Kumar said. They will keep track of movement of vehicles at checkposts along with local police and guard polling stations. He said collectors have been directed to track bank transactions exceeding Rs 1 lakh.

EC has directed MLAs to shut down their offices in government buildings to prevent them from using them for political campaigns. The same applies to local body representatives, including mayors. The commission has filed cases 8,345 cases against parties for defacing walls and putting posters and banners on public buildings, and 4,602 cases for defacing private property since Friday.
