Chennai Metro Rail is set to welcome nine driverless three-coach trains for its ₹63,246-crore Phase II expansion, expected by March 2025. The first train reached the Poonamallee depot in mid-October, with the second scheduled for delivery in December from the Sri City manufacturing facility.
This 118.9-km project spans three corridors - Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Light House to Poonamallee, and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur - covering key city areas and promising smoother commuting for Chennai’s residents.
Testing for the initial train is well underway, with 50% of static tests completed and dynamic trial runs anticipated soon.
