The MRO or Maintenance Repair Overhaul centre was supposed to be established at Chennai airport in 2023 itself. It is now said that there would be further delay regarding this.
It must be noted that AAI had decided to build MRO at the backside of Apron or loading/unloading area. The AAI has requested TN govt to allocate lands to build MRO as there is lack of space now.
In 2022, the state with the help of Chengalpet Revenue Dept acquired 32300 sq ft land from Kaul Bazaar present on the east side of the runway. It is learnt that following this acquisition AAI began the process of establishing MRO and mentioned that it would begin the Chennai operations from 2023.
It must be remembered that Shaurya Aeronautics signed an agreement with AAI for this project and to administrate the centre for the next 15 years.
What MRO is expected to do?
At the MRO, the flights that face technical snag would be repaired fast and by this cancellation of flights would be reduced. It is well known that at present when the international flights face technical snag issues then these flights would be parked on the runway for one or two days as the parts would not be available at the Chennai airport. It is superb to note that when MRO starts to function at Chennai airport then the technical snag issue would be fixed quickly.
The air passengers now suffer due to unwanted flight cancellations and delays because of delayed operation of MRO at the Chennai airport.
It must be remembered that in the beginning AAI mentioned that MRO could come into operation once the integrated terminal gets inaugurated. Bitter truth is that even after a year of inauguration of the integrated terminal MRO has not started operating at the airport in Chennai.
Issues with the plan diagram have been cited as the reason for delaying the operation of MRO at the Chennai airport now. Now, a new diagram is being prepared. This was as per AAI.
