Ahead of the northeast monsoon, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) intensified mass cleaning across 817 city parks on Friday. Mayor R. Priya, inspecting efforts at Sivan Park, KK Nagar, directed officials to repair damaged footpaths, play equipment, and non-functional fountains.

Following the 2023 Chennai floods caused by Cyclone Michaung, which led to the collection of 10,000 metric tonnes of garbage, the GCC aims to prevent a recurrence by targeting parks and public spaces. Cleaning operations ran from 6 a.m. to noon, focusing on 165 GCC-maintained parks, 88 adopted parks, and 616 outsourced parks.

The civic body is also enhancing efforts in Miyawaki forests, especially in north Chennai. Meanwhile, the GCC is awaiting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to auction abandoned vehicles.

Regarding the Cooum River restoration, Priya stated the project involves multiple agencies, including the Water Resources Department (WRD) and the Chennai River Restoration Trust (CRRT). The GCC has requested a report from CRRT on the project`s status.
