Chennai International Airport has been equipped with a new Airport Surface Friction Tester (ASFT) by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at a cost of ₹1.31 crore. Previously, two runway maintenance vehicles were shared across six southern states, but with increasing passenger traffic, an exclusive ASFT has now been allocated for Chennai.
The ASFT plays a crucial role in identifying areas with reduced friction, ensuring timely maintenance and preventing skidding incidents. The introduction of this advanced vehicle is expected to significantly enhance runway safety and aircraft braking performance.
AAI has deployed a total of eight new ASFTs across various airports, with one dedicated to Chennai. Designed for a 10-year service life, this addition will help maintain optimal runway conditions and improve overall flight safety.
