Chennai Metro Work Slows Down OMR Traffic, Widening Project Begins
Commuters on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) are facing tough traffic conditions following the launch of Chennai Metro Rail Phase II works. The stretch between SRP Tools and Navalur, once smooth and spacious, is now riddled with damaged roads and congestion, especially during peak hours.
Pedestrians struggle due to missing footpaths and dug-up service lanes, while motorists take detours to avoid traffic hotspots like Padur and Kelambakkam. The absence of proper road repairs and space crunch caused by large vehicles add to the chaos.
Meanwhile, a road widening project is underway on a 2.5-km stretch between Siruseri SIPCOT and Padur. Encroachments have been cleared, and the ₹42-crore project is expected to be completed by February 2026, aiming to improve traffic flow in this rapidly developing corridor.
