We take extra caution and care even while buying vegetables worth Rs. 10/- or Rs. 20/-. Caution & checking becomes all the more important when buying gold or golden jewellery worth lakhs of Rupees. Here are some methods to check the quality/purity of gold:

`Hallmark` stamp is one avenue which confirms the quality of the gold. Hallmark is given by the Indian Standards Institutes known as bis. Hallmark contains the triangular logo of bis, the number indicating the purity of  gold(no. 916 will be given for 22 carat gold). The seal will also contain the name of the centre giving the hallmark, the year when this was given, and the seal of the jeweller who sold it. In case any defect is found in the gold bought with Hallmark seal, complaints can be given to bis.

A jewel may be made up of many parts.  In that case, one has to check whether each part contains the Hallmark seal. Earlier, the quality of the gold was checked merely by scrapping i! Now-a-days, the quality of the gold is ascertained with carat meters. However, the experts in this line observe that even carat meters are not all that dependable.

The experts advise that one must buy gold or golden jewellery with proper receipt and any this will enable to make a complaint if any defect is detected later .
