Jewellers are on strike since March 2 demanding withdrawal of the Budget proposal to impose 1 per cent excise duty on non-silver jewellery. The strike entered the 15th day on Wednesday, with gold and jewellery establishments remaining closed across the country.
Today the jewellers will hold a rally at Ram Lila Maidan in New Delhi to protest against the Budget proposal to impose 1 per cent excise duty on non-silver jewellery.
2 Lakhs jewelry shops have been closed throughout the country.
Nearly 35, 000 shops are closed in Tamil Nadu. Nearly 20 shops were kept open in T Nagar. The protest has been withdrawn in Puducherry temporarily and shops have been opened. At this juncture all the jewellers will hold a rally today at Ram Lila Maidan in New Delhi to protest against the Budget proposal to impose 1 per cent excise duty on non-silver jewellery.
S. Shanthakumar, secretary of Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchants Association said, We are holding talks with the Union Government to withdraw the Budget proposal to impose 1 per cent excise duty on non-silver jewellery. Today we will attend an agitation in New Delhi.
