In the future, we might not come across heavy traffic congestion in Chennai due to this reason.

The news that has emerged out now is that the government is exploring the possibility of constructing a sea bridge linking LightHouse and Neelankarai. This ambitious project would ease the traffic in the city. A detailed project report or DPR regarding this work is being prepared now. This was brought out by the PWD minister Mr. E.V. Velu in the Assembly meeting yesterday.

During the question hours at the Assembly on Friday, Mr. K. Pitchandi, deputy speaker demanded the construction of a sea bridge between Light House and Mamallapuram. For that, Mr. Velu mentioned that it was a good suggestion but far-fetched one at this time. The PWD minister hinted about the department exploring the possibility of constructing a sea bridge for a 15km stretch between Light House and Neelankarai. The minister spoke about how PWD has initiated the process of preparing DPR and how several funding options have been considered.

It is learnt that the PWD is thinking about receiving financial aid from the centre or from public-private partnership model or PPP model.  In the near future, the TNSHA or Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority would take up six laning of the road stretch between Thiruvanmiyur and Akkarai to ease traffic congestion on the East Coast Road or ECR in Chennai.

There are no plans of construction of a bridge between Dhansuhkodi and Sri Lanka as the project was rejected by the Sri Lankan government. This was mentioned by the PWD minister.
