Just a couple of days back, at the famous Guindy based Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital, a doctor was attacked inside the hospital and this grabbed the attention of many.

Now, the TN health minister Mr. M. Subramanian has made it clear that all the govt hospitals in TN would have metal detectors and Radio Frequency identification Device or RFID tags for the patients and visitors.

Information is that at RGGGH in Chennai this RFID tag system has already been implemented. It is now said that as per the system red tags would be issued to those admitted to the ICU. Yellow tags would be issued to the attendants of the patients in the super specialty departments and green tags to those patients admitted in the surgical super specialty dept. For the attendants of those admitted in the general wards, blue tags would be issued.

The government hospitals these days are overcrowded with patients and visitors etc as there are many advanced facilities in these hospitals. It is now mentioned that as the hospitals become more and more crowded outpatients would also be issued identity cards for the safety of the doctors.

For implementation of the safety measures at the govt hospitals, discussions would be had with joint directors and district health officers etc. This was as per the health minister.

The health minister spoke about how the metal detectors would be installed in a few hospitals initially to understand the feasibility. He concluded that the names of the selected hospitals would be announced soon. It must be recalled that in the month of August during a meeting to discuss the safety and security measures at the hospitals the health minister mentioned that a joint security audit would be held across all the government hospitals.

It is learnt that orders were issued to the Directorate of Medical Education and Research, Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services, Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine to make sure that CCTV cameras that were installed in the hospitals were functioning and their footage monitored regularly. It is now said that in a phased manner the security measures are being implemented.
