Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has signed a contract with M/s. BEML Limited to procure 70 driverless (UTO) 3-car trains, totaling 210 cars, for ₹3,657.53 crores. The agreement was formalized in the presence of CMRL Managing Director Thiru. M.A. Siddique, I.A.S., with senior officials from CMRL and BEML in attendance.
The contract includes the design, manufacture, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of the trains for 15 years. The first train will be delivered to Madhavaram Depot by the end of 2026, followed by rigorous testing. Subsequent deliveries are scheduled between March 2027 and April 2029.
These UTO trains will serve Corridors 3 and 5 of CMRL`s Phase 2 project. This marks the second of three contracts for driverless trains, with the first prototype already delivered to Poonamallee Depot. The third tender process is underway.
