The recent low-pressure system, which lingered for ten days, delivered one last spell of enjoyable rains to Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu before dissipating. This system, which returned briefly, provided two days of rainfall, significantly boosting water levels in Chennai`s reservoirs.
Poondi Lake is now surplus, with heavy catchment rains in Nagari and Nandhiyar areas, as Tiruttani recorded 82 mm and Nagari catchment 70 mm of rainfall. Water release from Poondi Lake is expected soon. Redhills and Chembarambakkam Lakes are over 90% full, while Cholavaram Lake remains limited to 30% capacity due to ongoing repairs. With all major lakes in Chennai nearing 95% capacity, the city is well-prepared for the season’s end, and no heavy rains are expected at present.
Today marks the final day of rainfall from this system, with several regions across Tamil Nadu, including Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Vellore, Dindigul, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Tiruvannamalai, Namakkal, Salem, Erode, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Trichy, the Delta regions, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Nilgiris, and Coimbatore, receiving light to moderate rains. Some areas may experience one or two heavy spells.
Rainfall in the Chennai region (KTCC) is expected to return briefly on December 30-31. The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is predicted to make a comeback in January, bringing significant rains to Sri Lanka, South Tamil Nadu, and the Delta regions.
Today officially concludes the rains from this low-pressure system, marking a successful season of surplus water and manageable weather for Tamil Nadu.
