Meteorological Department Warns of Heavy Rainfall and Cyclonic Winds in Tamil Nadu

The Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning for several districts in Tamil Nadu for today and tomorrow. The Director of the Chennai Meteorological Center, P. Chenthamarai Kannan, reported that the prevailing atmospheric circulation over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu will bring about significant weather changes.

Forecast:

  • Moderate rainfall is anticipated across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today and tomorrow (October 16 and 17). This is attributed to the atmospheric conditions.
  • Heavy rainfall is expected in hilly regions of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi districts today. Tomorrow, these areas, along with Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts, are likely to experience heavy rain at isolated locations.
  • From October 18 to 21, light to moderate rain is expected in various places.
  • Chennai and its suburbs will see partly cloudy skies for the next two days. There`s a possibility of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in some areas.


Wind Warning:

  • Coastal areas of South Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, and Kumari Sea are likely to experience winds blowing at speeds of 40-45 km/h today and tomorrow, with intermittent gusts reaching up to 55 km/h.
  • Additionally, there is a possibility of cyclonic winds. Therefore, it is strongly advised that fishermen avoid venturing into these areas during this period for their safety.
