The Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC is planning to demolish and reconstruct 12 bridges in Virugambakkam. The aim of this would be to provide a solution for easy water flow in the Virugambakkam canal. regarding these 12 bridges.
It must be noted that these bridges have been disrupting the free flow of water in the canal. It is now said that a survey would be carried out regarding encroachments present and connecting points would be constructed.
For many years now, the canal present at Virugambakkam has been choked with silt and garbage etc. It must be remembered that earlier this canal was maintained by the WRD or water resources department.
This Virugambakkam canal is present from Bhuvaneswar Nagar to Cooum River in the Nelson Manickam Road is known to us.
For free and easy flow of water into the canal from the residential localities in Chennai, GCC has planned to build divert points.
To prevent the dumping of garbage etc into the water body, a compound wall would be constructed by the GCC soon. By these activities, inundation in many places like Annai Satya Nagar, Chinmaya Nagar, MMDA Colony and Arumbakkam etc would be avoided.
The surprising piece of information is the water has not been desilted here. Truth is that the untreated sewage has been discharged from the residential places in the locality. Especially in the monsoon season, the area would get inundated because of lack of restoration work in the Virugambakkam canal.
