Indian Election Commission has informed that the youth can apply for inclusion in the Voters` List even as they reach 17 years of age!
As per the current voting system, only citizens above 18 years of age can vote in India. As such, the citizens who reach 18 years of age can apply to the Election Commission to include their names in the Voters` List!
They need to submit copies of their Aadhar Card, a passport-size photo, etc.
The Election Commission will scrutinise this application, verify and then include the names in the Voters` List.
It is to be noted that only those citizens on the Voters` List can cast their votes!
In this situation, the Indian Election Commission has now released a new procedure to apply for inclusion in the Voters` List!
As per this revised system, citizens who have completed 17 years of age can apply in advance for inclusion in the Voters` list!
So, there is no need for the condition that the citizen MUST have reached 18 years of age as on 1st January for applying to be included in the voters` list!
The Indian Election Commission has further announced that henceforth, the provision will be given to applying for inclusion in the Voters` List in January, April, July and October every year!
