Mahalaya Amavasai in 2024 will be observed on Wednesday, October 2. It is a day to honor ancestors, and offering tarpanam with sesame seeds and water is a simple yet powerful ritual. The ideal time for giving tarpanam is from 6 AM to 1 PM, avoiding Rahu and Yamaganda periods. Performing tarpanam near holy rivers is considered auspicious.
Who can perform tarpanam?
Men who have lost their mother or father can perform tarpanam. Women who have lost their husbands can also do so. However, Sumangali women should neither fast nor perform tarpanam. It is advised not to put a kolam at the entrance of the house on this day.
According to the Puranas, offering tarpanam to ancestors in Pitruloka not only satisfies their hunger but also brings blessings.
Additionally, donating clothes, water, and feeding cows with agathikeer are considered good deeds. In the evening, devotees can visit temples, light two ghee lamps, and complete their worship.
