A sensational piece of news that could give the Chennaites a reason to rejoice now!!
On Tuesday, 1st of April 2025, Mr. E.V. Velu, minister for state Highway and minor ports grabbed many eyeballs when he announced that a sea bridge would be constructed from Ennore in north Chennai to Poonjeri near Mahabalipuram along the East Coast Road or ECR in Chennai. The aim of this sex bridge would be to reduce traffic congestion in Chennai.
While replying to the demands for the grants for the Dept of Highways and Minor Ports and Public Works, Mr. E.V. Velu made this important announcement at the state assembly.
The experts belonging to the prestigious IITM would be consulted while preparing a detailed project report or DPR regarding constructing sea bridge. This was mentioned by some sources belonging to Tamil Nadu Road Development Company or TNRDC. The sources explained that on land the Ennore to Poonjeri was of a total distance of 73.5km. Currently, the project is in the initial stage. The sources concluded that no information was available regarding the total distance of the sea bridge that would run along off the coast.
In several phases, the proposed sea bridge between Ennore and Poonjeri might be implemented. It is known that the state Highway dept was contemplating the revival of Light House to Kottivakkam sea link road project that got shelved in 2011. This announcement about the construction of a new sea bridge has come at this juncture.
In phase 1, the sea bridge project would be implemented from Light House to Kottivakkam and would be extended further. It must be taken into account that the state government has proposed a sea bridge connecting Tiruvottiyur and Chennai Port.
At a cost of Rs 14 cores, a U shaped service road would be built beneath the Villivakkam ROB on the IRR for the vehicles moving towards Korattur and Padi. This was as per the minister.
To link Perungalathur and Madambakkam Jn of Tambaram eastern bypass, a high level bridge would be built over the Rajakilpakkam Lake. For this, an amount of Rs 233 cr would be spent.
